Frequently Asked Questions

(**UPDATED**) Does my child still need a physical for band?
For the 2020-2021 school year, UIL has waived the need for a new physical examination for all band students unless the following are true:
1.The student is new to the Pure Gold marching band this year
2.They have a pre-existing condition (a “yes” answer to the first 5 questions on the medical history form)
https://www.uiltexas.org/files/athletics/forms/PrePhysFormRvsd1_10_20.pdf

**You may provide a physical from their 8th grade year in place of having to get a new one.
WISD still strongly encourages participating individuals to have a physical to ensure the health and safety of each and every student in our program.

What other precautions are being taken for safety?
We are looking into all ideas and precautions for safety. The UIL, CDC, TMEA, and TEA have posted guidelines for rehearsals. The University of Colorado is also leading a COVID-19 scientific study. The link to their research and preliminary information can be found here: https://www.nfhs.org/articles/unprecedented-international-coalition-led-by-performing-arts-organizations-to-commission-covid-19-study/

Will students who drive be allowed to park in their normal area regardless if they have different drop off/check in locations?
Yes! If a student drives his/her own car, parking will be located in the north student parking lot closest to the tennis courts. Please park your vehicle close to the tennis courts as to allow more room for students being dropped off by parents. You may then walk to your specific check-in area so you can go through the screening process.

How do I log on to pay the rest of my band fees?
Visit www.charmsoffice.com.
Click on Parents/Students/Members
Enter the school code: wyliehsband
Enter your student area password. This will be the password you set up.

I am having trouble accessing my Charms account.
1. Complete the steps for recovering your password with Charms.
2.
If you do step one and still cannot access your account, contact us to have your password reset.

Are we still having summer band?
Yes! Please adhere to the calendar dates.
We are working with Wylie administrators to get clearer answers.
We will publish a detailed schedule soon.

Are masks required?
Yes! Your awesome band boosters will provide 2 reusable, washable band neck gaiters!
Details regarding mask requirements can be found here: https://www.uiltexas.org/music/marching-band/marching-band-summer-practices-rehearsals-2020

(**UPDATED**) Will we perform at football games?
We are working with Wylie administrators to make the best decisions for performances. Student safety is our first priority. Thank you for your patience as we work through details.

**The band perform at home games only. We are working on specific health and safety procedures for these games.

If I am choosing to participate as a virtual student, do I come up to school for band practices only?
Thank you for your patience as we work through these details with our administrators.
The current statement from UIL is as follows: Students participating in remote learning offered by their school district, whether synchronous or asynchronous (as defined by TEA), may participate in UIL activities if they meet all other UIL eligibility requirements. Students must be enrolled in remote learning options through the school the student will represent. Schools may develop local policies with additional requirements for participation. You can find more information related to the full-time student rule in the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules.

Can we still audition for the Region/All-State process?
Yes! All TMEA auditions (winds and jazz band) will be conducted through an online process.
Music is available now through our “Members Only” link found on the band website.
We will continue to update you on this process once we receive information from TMEA.

What do I need for summer band?
  1. A water jug capable of storing all the water you need for a couple of hours. A plastic water bottle will not be enough for rehearsal. *We cannot provide water. Water fountains will not be available. Students will not be allowed to share water.
  2. A mask to be worn when not actively rehearsing (the band boosters are providing 2 washable, reusable neck gaiters for you to keep!)
  3. Sunscreen
  4. A hat (FYI--you can also purchase a band baseball cap you can wear while in uniform!)
  5. Your instrument and music each day

Do I leave my instrument in the band hall?
No and Yes.  We are working on ways to assist students with their instrument storage during the school day, however, instruments will not be placed in the storage shelves.  For summer band purposes, only percussion and sousaphones will be stored at the school. We will issue concert tubas, euphoniums, and french horns to stay at home.

Once school starts, students will be allowed to leave their instruments in the assigned space on the band hall floor during the school day.  All instruments except percussion and sousaphones must be picked up after school each day.

Will we still have the Big Brother-Big Sister program?
Yes! You will still be paired with a Big for the year. Remember to complete the survey so we can pair you with someone! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdinLsjnxjjvvhQ5Ffmgihv4nas6we6-WnBtYpQOgZibwXRXg/viewform

Can I bring snacks and food for my section?
No.  UIL has strictly forbidden shared food and/or drink.  The staff may NOT provide food and/or drink to students either.  Students must have their own personal water and snacks.

Can I hang out in the band hall while I wait for a ride?
No.  School premises are not available to students when not actively participating.  There will be specific entry and exit procedures for the band hall.  When not in use for active rehearsals, the band hall will remain locked.

All students are strongly encouraged to leave rehearsal from the field when possible.  Please do not socialize at your vehicles.
We will practice all social distancing rules/guidelines/procedures as outlined by the CDC, UIL, TEA, and TMEA.

Is there a screening process for band?
Yes! Everyone will complete a screening process electronically and have temperatures checked.
